The World Series of Poker Main Event is the Super Bowl of poker bringing together online poker stars and live tournament professionals all in one huge event. This year’s Main Event is the second largest in history and the largest since the UIGEA was passed with 7,319 players competing for a prize pool of $68,798,600.
This Main Event only falls behind the 2006 Main Event when 8,773 players attended at the very peak of the poker boom and Jamie Gold scooped the largest ever first prize in the history of poker. The 2010 edition again saw Day 1d the most popular day but only just. Day 1c featured 2,314 players to Day 1d’s 2,391 with the first two days again with much smaller numbers.
The entire Series was the largest attended in the history of WSOP up 20% on the previous best of last year despite the number of tournaments staying the same. There were 72,966 entries across the 57 events which created a WSOP prize pool of $180,774,427. The WSOP has now awarded $1,228,375,121 during 41 years.
“By every measure, this was the most successful World Series of Poker in the event’s illustrious 41-year history,” said World Series of Poker Vice President Ty Stewart. “From the lowest buy-in events to the highest, we saw enormous player demand translate into lengthy registration lists and massive prize pools. As the WSOP main event progresses, we’re looking forward to creating several new multi-millionaires.”
The World Series of Poker has continued to prove all doubters wrong and goes from strength to strength. Both online poker players and live poker players realise the importance of this series and as the legality of online poker is eventually cleared up we can expect the Series to grow even further.
