Whilst the United States has continued its dominance of the World Series of Poker, both the UK and Canada have picked up five bracelets each to mark this World Series of Poker as one for the international players. Professional poker players from Russia, Norway and France have all won at this year’s World Series as well as the first ever Bangladesh born bracelet winner Ayaz Mahmood.
The UK and Canada are the biggest contributors to the international haul with five each but in total approximately 1 in 4 of the bracelets this year have left US soil. For Canada, Aadam Daya, Pascal LeFrancois, Miguel Proulx, Scott Montgomery and Gavin Smith are the bracelet winners with Gavin Smith losing his tag as one of the best poker players in the world without a bracelet.
Out of the UK’s five bracelets all are from England and two have recorded 2nd place finishes where the prize money has eclipsed that from their bracelet win. Praz Bansi got the ball rolling for the UK with a win in Event #4 one of the early $1,500 NLHE events labelled donkaments for the sheer volume of amateur players in the fields. James Dempsey continued the momentum with a win in Event #9 the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’Em for just under $200k. He then went on to finish 2nd in the $10k Omaha 8 or better for just a shade over $300k.
The second UK player who received a bracelet and a big second place is Richard Ashby who won Event #21 $1,500 Seven Card Stud for about $140k and then went on to record a 2nd place finish in the $10k HORSE event for $380k. Mike Ellis and Steve Jelinek continued the run picking up bracelets in Event #30 – $1,500 NLHE and Event #41 Pot Limit Omaha 8 or better respectively.
Between these five players the UK have winnings of $2,360,977 which just eclipses Canada’s five bracelet winners who have pulled in $2,260,155 leaving a gap of only $100,000 between the two countries. Only winnings from players who have won bracelets have been included so unfortunately Neil Channing’s final table exploits are not included in this calculation.
There is less than a week until the start of the Main Event and poker players everywhere will be intrigued to see who will reach the final table of this huge tournament and if a US player will take home the title. Online poker players should be getting their practice in and earning rakeback in anticipation of next year’s event. There’s no time like the present and the US are going to need some more entrants next year to fight off the foreign hoard.
